94pts – The Tasting Panel/Somm
A single vineyard Cab grown on volcanic soils, aged 20 months in French oak. Fresh aromas of blackberry and vanilla lead to teeth-coating tannins. Sun-drenched boysenberry displays a regal presence. The wine is refined and linear, with an intensity of flavor.
Our 2022 Calistoga Cabernet Sauvignon is a richly layered expression of the varietal, showcasing remarkable clarity and tension. Aromas of ripe blackberry, black cherry, and licorice lead into complex notes of dark chocolate, crushed stone, and earthy undertones. Full-bodied and structured, the wine features fine-grained, polished tannins that seamlessly frame the concentrated fruit. Subtle hints of vanilla and cedar emerge at the mid-palate, adding depth and nuance. A vein of volcanic minerality runs throughout, extending into a long, focused finish that captures the distinct character of the Calistoga terroir. A wine of precision and power—enjoy now or cellar gracefully for 10+ years.

Clone 6

Clone 6 is one of the most revered selections of Cabernet Sauvignon, often referred to as the “California heritage clone.” Originating from pre-Prohibition vine stock, it was preserved and propagated for its distinct character. Clone 6 is prized for its low yields and the exceptional intensity it imparts to the wines. It is also widely recognized for representing the typicity of Cabernet Sauvignon—exemplifying the classic structure, complexity, and varietal expression that define the grape at its best.

Soil vs Wine

Our soils are extremely well drained, composed of Volcanic ash and alluvial elements. These soils force the vines to struggle, resulting in smaller berries with a higher skin-to-juice ratio that fosters structured tannins, deep color, and phenolic intensity.
