GUBEL FAMILY VINEYARDS
H e r i t a g e & C l o n a l I d e n t i t y
Clone 6 is one of the most revered selections of Cabernet Sauvignon. Often referred to as the “California heritage clone,” it originated from pre-Prohibition vine stock that was preserved and propagated for its distinct character. Unlike the more commonly planted clones like 337 or 7, Clone 6 is prized for its low yields and the exceptional intensity it imparts to the wines.
Terroir Influence – Calistoga AVA
Nestled at the northernmost tip of Napa Valley, Calistoga is known for its volcanic and alluvial soils, extreme diurnal shifts, and some of the warmest growing conditions in the valley. The Clone 6 Cabernet thrives here due to:
• Heat and sunlight: These promote complete phenolic ripeness, allowing the thick-skinned berries of Clone 6 to develop depth and complexity without losing acidity.
• Soil composition: Volcanic loam and gravelly subsoils provide excellent drainage, naturally restricting vigor and concentrating fruit intensity.
• Elevation and diurnal range: The AVA’s cooler nights help retain freshness and aromatic lift, balancing the powerful tannins that Clone 6 is known for.
Viticultural Characteristics
Clone 6 is a famously low-yielding clone, often producing small, loosely packed clusters and small berries. This translates into:
• High skin-to-juice ratio.
• Robust tannin structure.
• Deep color saturation.
• Enhanced flavor concentration.
While challenging to farm, it rewards with structure, density, and longevity in the bottle.
"From our dream to your table, we hope you enjoy our wine."
